Water-balloons: A life lesson by my Mom

Growing up in a small town in the sixties had its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages were everyone knew everyone, and it was very friendly. That was also the disadvantage — everyone knew everyone. I remember one time my cousin and I were totally bored. It was a hot summer evening, and we had some water balloons left over from a party earlier in the week. My Grandmother, who lived next door to me, had a low-cut-hedge. We got this crazy idea about filling the balloons with water, hiding behind the hedge and throwing them at cars when they passed by, because in those days people did not have car air-conditioning and drove around with the windows down, so it was more of a challenge to not land them inside the cars.
We were doing good, hitting the roofs of the cars and the hoods. Not one went in the windows. However, we still heard a lot of complaining from the people (who knows why). Some even drove around the block to see if they could find us, they never did. Then it happened, a car came by, and the balloon went right into the window, splattering everywhere inside the car. Wouldn’t you know it, it was a police car! When the policeman pulled over to the curve, he got out, called out to us, and that’s when we ran for our lives. We ran all around the block and lost him.
